Helvetas – Community-Based Tourism

About Helvetas
Helvetas is a leading Swiss organisation for development cooperation and humanitarian aid – non-denominational and politically independent. Since 1955, it has been working worldwide to overcome poverty, strengthen human rights and combat injustice.
The focus is on poor and disadvantaged people: they all have the right to fair opportunities to develop their potential – in the spirit of helping people help themselves. Helvetas is quick to respond in conflict situations and extreme weather events. Also thanks to donations, it implements sustainable development programmes in 35 countries.
A hidden gem in northern Laos
In the heart of the green, mountainous north of Laos lies a region that few people know about, yet which is brimming with potential: Phongsali. Here, where centuries-old tea trees grow, dense forests thrive and ethnic minorities keep their culture alive, Helvetas is working with village communities to support a unique project: Hidden Jewel.
The aim is to promote sustainable tourism that preserves nature, respects cultural diversity and opens up new opportunities for the future. Although Phongsali is rich in beauty and traditions, the economic opportunities for many families are limited. Numberous young people are leaving their villages because they lack prospects. But this does not have to remain the case.

The region is a natural paradise with spectacular river gorges, impressive mountain slopes and remarkable biodiversity, ranging from rare plants and local birds to endangered animal species. The ancient tea trees, some over 400 years old, are not only botanical rarities but also cultural symbols.
Together with local partners, Helvetas has launched a sustainable tourism initiative – by the region, for the region. Guesthouses are being built, guided hikes are offered, and visitors can experience tea rituals and craftsmanship first-hand. Those who travel here not only encounter impressive nature, but also hosts who offer insight into their way of life – and are actively working on their future.
Part of the income goes into a community fund for schools, roads and water supply. This way, every visit becomes a contribution that has a lasting impact. Helvetas has been working in Phongsali since 2014 – with respect, engagement and trust. And experience shows that development can only succeed if it grows from within.
